DAWNzeit: A German-Australian artistic collaboration of light, vision, sound and music

Australian composer David W. Pyke is a key collaborator in DAWNzeit, an interdisciplinary artistic project led by award-winning German media artist Pipo Tafel. This immersive experience delves into themes of time, transformation, and renewal, using dawn as a powerful metaphor. In 2024, Pyke composed eight original musical sketches, based upon reflections of Pipo Tafel, recorded in Cologne, Germany, forming a vital layer within DAWN's evolving artistic framework. These works harmonise orchestral sensibility with contemporary media-based presentation, inviting you to explore nature's phenomena through exotic instruments like koto and shakuhachi and in custom harp pieces such as 'Prelude to a Day' and Dawn Fantasia for solo harp.

The narrative behind the notes

Each of David W. Pyke's current projects weaves a unique narrative, making them particularly exciting. DAWNzeit, for instance, explores natural phenomena through the evocative sounds of exotic instruments like the koto and shakuhachi. 'Prelude to a Day' is a newly composed piece for harp in 2026 and it will be followed up by a 'Fantasia for Solo Harp' in the near future.  In 2024, eight stages of the Dawn process as described by Pipo Tafel were encapsulated into  'Dawn sketches' which were masterfully recorded celebrating the Dawn theme in a way that artistically brings this vision to life. The fusion of traditional instrumentation with contemporary media creates an experience that is both ancient and cutting-edge. We're excited to announce that DAWNzeit will be exhibited at Artspace Mackay in January 2027.
